15. Illustrations and decorations |
This square piece of paper is painted with the triangular yantra diagram of sTag la me ’bar. It was folded twice into a rectangle of a quarter of the original size, and then twice into a small rectangular format, possibly so as to be easily kept between the folios of a text. At the centre of the diagram is inscribed the mantra of sTag la me ’bar. It is included within a cluster of three concentric triangles patterned with flames and painted yellow, red, and blue, respectively, which are indicative of the deity’s destructive activities. These triangles are themselves surrounded by three octagonal – rather than circular – ranges of rainbow-like beams of blue, yellow, and red light, multi-colour scrollwork generally indicating heaps of fire, and red flames. |
